There are over one thousand pupils receiving instruction and approximately five hundred and fifty of these take part in the authority wide activities. Many of the schools have orchestras or wind bands of their own, which perform regularly in the community. Fundraising for charity, taking part in festivals, galas or church services are some of the activities they undertake.
There is a strong emphasis placed on smaller groups or solo performing and opportunities are found for pupils who wish to pursue these kinds of activities.
Since 2003, East Dunbartonshire Council has developed a programme of tuition for all Primary school pupils which has enabled the Service to achieve the Scottish Government target of 1 year’s free instruction for all pupils by the time they reach Primary 6. In addition to this, we have seen a small but significant increase in our core provision in some schools. These changes have been made possible by Youth Music Initiative (YMI) funding from the Scottish Government through Creative Scotland.
Many East Dunbartonshire Pupils participate in such ensembles as West of Scotland Orchestra and Concert Band, National Youth Orchestra and National String Orchestra of Scotland. A number of these pupils are also members of the National Youth Choir of Scotland and RSNO Junior Chorus.
